Tooth whitening is a well established procedure in cosmetic dentistry designed to lighten the color of your teeth. When performed by a professional and done properly, whitening should not harm your teeth or gums. Hydrogen peroxide, the active agent, has been used for many years in the treatment of gums and other oral soft tissue.
There are two types of whitening, "take home" whitening and "in office" whitening. Take home whitening can be done anywhere. The process involves wearing a custom made tray filled with a mild whitening gel. You then need to wear the gel filled tray for a specific period of time each day over a period from two to four weeks.
ZOOM is the newest in office whitening system available. This system is ideal for patients seeking fast results. Zoom uses a full mouth, high intensity bleach light (filtered to reduce heat) combined with a 25% hydrogen peroxide, light activated gel that is capable of lightening your teeth 5 - 10 shades in about an hour. This whitening procedure involves a short preparation to isolate soft tissue. The gel is then applied to the facial surface of exposed teeth and activated by the light. The gel gently penetrates the teeth to remove stain and discoloration from the dentin and enamel. Patients experience little or no sensitivity and are monitored throughout the procedure. The darker the teeth the better the results. |
