Sealant is a resin material that is placed on the biting surfaces of posterior teeth. Our back teeth consist of many pits and fissures, which are small tiny grooves. These grooves are so tiny many times that the toothbrush bristles cannot penetrate down into them. Thus what happens is tiny amounts of sugar and bacteria can become embedded in these grooves. Overtime a cavity may develop.
Sealants do exactly what their name implies they are placed on the biting surfaces and seal the pits and fissures so bacteria and food particles cannot become embedded in the grooves. Sealants are not a guarantee you will not get a cavity but they do reduce the likelihood by about 60 to 70%. We encourage sealants on both adults and children. Sealants are a great non-invasive tool we have to try to prevent cavities. They are placed by our hygienist in as little as 1-2 minutes.
